Four layers, not one: carpet, pad, tack strips and staples. Leaving any of them is the difference between a floor an installer can work on and a floor they will charge you to finish.

The pad is usually glued or stapled to the subfloor and tears rather than lifting cleanly, so it comes out in pieces. Tack strips run the entire perimeter of every room and are nailed into the subfloor. Staples are the tedious part — a carpeted room holds hundreds of them and every one has to come out before anything goes down on top.

Transition strips and thresholds come out with it, and the subfloor is swept clean at the end. That is the state a flooring installer expects to arrive to.

The removal finishes before the installer starts, and their date is what the job is scheduled against. Mention it when booking.

Flooring installers generally arrive on a fixed day with material already cut and a crew already paid for. A removal that runs into their morning costs them the day and costs you the rescheduling. A day of clearance between removal and install is the arrangement that goes wrong least often.

Some installers include tear-out and some do not, and the ones that do frequently price it high because it is the part of the job they least want. Worth asking them directly before booking this separately — if their tear-out price is reasonable, use it.

Pet-damaged and water-damaged carpet are both normal work. Mould remediation is not, and needs a licensed contractor.

Urine-soaked carpet and pad are heavier than dry material and are handled sealed rather than dragged down a hallway, for reasons that do not need explaining. Water-damaged carpet gains an enormous amount of weight — soaked pad in particular — which changes the volume calculation and is worth mentioning when quoting.

The limit is the subfloor. Visible growth on the subfloor or the framing underneath is a remediation job and needs somebody licensed to assess it. Because it is bulky and heavy at the same time, and it does not compact. A rolled room of carpet takes more trailer space than its square footage suggests and weighs more than anyone estimates.

It does not fit a residential cart at any size, and it is refused as normal refuse. This is why carpet almost always travels with other work.
